What is a Prenatal Massage?
As you are growing your little one, your body will experience anatomical changes. Prenatal massage is designed to help alleviate the muscle tension associated with your body's changes.
Traditionally, most massages occur with you spending half the time lying face-down on your stomach and half the time facing up. While pregnant, your baby bump does not accommodate face down, and a face up position puts pressure on blood vessels that can disrupt blood flow to your baby, making you nauseated.
At Tandem Touch massage, we are trained and skilled at incorporating special cushionins that will not only provide a safe experience, but a relaxing one as well. Our goal is for you to leave rejuvinated and feeling cared.
What are the benefits of prenatal massage?
There are many benefits to prenatal massage. Research shows that massage can reduce stress hormones in your body and relax and loosen your muscles. The increase of endorphins released in your body can also act as a natural elimination to pain.
When pregnant, your blood is working overtime to supply nutrients and carry away waste from the placenta. As such, you have probably experienced increased heart rates, swelling and more. With prenatal massage, you will increase the rate at which your blood flows, reduceing the stress put on your heart and helping make your job of growing a baby easier.
Undoubtedly, you have experienced a bit of swelling in your body. One of the added benefits of prenatal massage is that is allows the opportunity to address areas of edema (a fancy word for fluid retension in muscles) and promote an increase of lymphatic drainage. Overall this can help eliminate swelling in your hands and feet (as long as the swelling is not a result of preeclampsia) and ease or alleviate hedaches and sinus pressure.
Receiving prenatal massages can also help improve your sleep, reduce joint, neck and back pain, help eliminate leg cramping, address pain associated with sciatica.
